Take a moment and think of the things you enjoy most in life. What are you passionate about? Is it spending time with your family? Is it sports? Or is it working with your hands? What are you most excited about in life? Now don’t get us wrong, there is nothing wrong with enjoying the gifts our gracious God has given us, in fact it would be a great error not to. But take a moment to consider where the God that gave you these things, fits into that list. Do you enjoy God as much as you enjoy His gifts?
The Westminster catechism says we are to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
So what does it mean to enjoy God? It means to revel in all that He is. It is to ascribe to Him what already belongs to Him, namely glory and honor. It is to praise Him for Who He is, and for what He has done for us, lowly sinners.
To enjoy God is to wonder at His greatness, to marvel at His mystery! It is to ponder His excellence, just as David did in Psalms 8:1.
O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!
To enjoy God is to be amazed by His power and creative genius, just as David did in verse 3.
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
To enjoy God means to be awestruck and humbled that this great God who holds the very universe together has chosen us to love and is “mindful” of us, just as David was in verse 4.
WHAT IS MAN THAT YOU ARE MINDFUL OF HIM, AND THE SON OF MAN THAT YOU VISIT HIM? FOR YOU HAVE MADE HIM A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS, AND YOU HAVE CROWNED HIM WITH GLORY AND HONOR.
We enjoy God when we praise Him for all He has done for us. That He did not leave us to our sinful selves but sent His son Jesus Christ to call us out of Darkness, to pay the price for our sins.
Enjoying God takes practice, we do not come by it naturally, but God has given us the help we need. He has given us His word! Within it are words of instruction. It is all we need to show us how to enjoy God forever.
